History
Kotte was the island's most powerful kingdom in the 15th century, its moated capital built amid marshes by Parakramabahu VI, the last king to unite all Sri Lanka. Abandoned in the Portuguese era, it was reborn in 1982 when the new parliament complex rose on Diyawanna lake and it became the official capital, Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte.
