Negombo

Negombo is a laid-back coastal town on Sri Lanka's west coast, about 10 km from Bandaranaike International Airport. Known as the country's main airport-gateway town, it is famous for its large lagoon, busy fish market, Dutch-era canals, golden beaches, fresh seafood and a strong Catholic heritage that earned it the nickname 'Little Rome'.

History
An important spice-trade and fishing port for centuries, Negombo was fortified by the Portuguese in the 16th century (who introduced Catholicism) and taken by the Dutch in 1640, who expanded the fort and dug the canal network to move cinnamon. The British later modernised it as a fishing and trade port. Fishing and the Catholic community remain central to its identity.
