History

The Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara marks the spot where, by tradition, the Buddha made his third visit to the island, and the site has been sacred for well over two millennia. Rebuilt after Portuguese destruction, the temple is celebrated for its 20th-century Solias Mendis murals and its January Duruthu Perahera.
