History
Haputale clings to the southern rim of the hill country, where the escarpment drops nearly a kilometre to the plains. It was the heart of Sir Thomas Lipton's tea empire — Lipton's Seat above the Dambatenne estate he built in 1890 is where the magnate surveyed his fields — and it remains an authentic tea-town in a spectacular setting.
