History
Ella grew from a small highland village along the colonial-era railway through tea country, its gap-top setting linked in legend to the Ramayana. The Nine Arches viaduct, completed in 1921 entirely of brick and stone, and the surrounding tea-covered peaks made it the hill country's favourite backpacker base.
