History
Gampola was the island's capital in the mid-14th century under kings Buwanekabahu IV and Vikramabahu III, and the great Lankatilaka and Gadaladeniya temples built in that era still stand nearby. The town later became a tea and railway hub on the Mahaweli's upper valley.
