History
Bentota's river mouth was a garrisoned crossing under the Portuguese and Dutch, and its rest house was already famous in colonial times. In the late 1960s it became independent Ceylon's first planned resort zone, designed in part by Geoffrey Bawa, whose Lunuganga garden estate sits just inland.
