History

Yapahuwa was Sri Lanka's capital for a single reign in the 13th century, when Bhuvanaikabahu I fortified the granite rock and enshrined the Tooth Relic at its summit. Its steep ceremonial stairway, guarded by the famous stone lions — one now on the ten-rupee note — is among the finest medieval stonework on the island.
