History

Kalutara commands the mouth of the Kalu Ganga and was fortified in turn by the Portuguese, Dutch, and British; the Kalutara Bodhiya beside the bridge shelters a sapling lineage of the sacred Anuradhapura bo tree, and its hollow modern stupa is the world's largest of its kind. The town also gave its name to the basket-weaving and mangosteen country around it.
