History
King Kashyapa (477-495 AD) built his palace atop Sigiriya's 200-metre rock after seizing the throne, ringing it with water gardens, mirror-polished walls, and the celebrated cloud-maiden frescoes. After his fall it served as a Buddhist monastery until the 14th century, and the 'Lion Rock' citadel is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
