History

Kataragama is one of South Asia's great multi-faith pilgrimage towns, sacred to Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, and the Veddah people alike as the abode of the god Skanda-Murugan. Its jungle shrine, mentioned in chronicles from the early centuries AD, draws vast crowds for the July-August Esala festival with its fire-walking and kavadi dancing.
