History

Dambadeniya served as Sri Lanka's capital in the 13th century under Parakramabahu II, when the Sacred Tooth Relic was enshrined on the rock above the town and some of classical Sinhala literature's great works were written. Ruins of the palace and the Vijayasundararama temple recall its brief golden age.
