History
Udawalawe National Park was created in 1972 around the new Walawe reservoir to shelter wildlife displaced by the dam, and its open grasslands now hold the island's most reliably seen wild elephants. The Elephant Transit Home, opened in 1995, rehabilitates orphaned calves for release back into the park.
