History

Kurunegala, ringed by giant rock outcrops named for the animals they resemble, was Sri Lanka's capital for about half a century in the late 13th and early 14th centuries. The Tooth Relic was housed here under kings including Parakramabahu IV before the capital moved on, and the town remains the hub of the coconut-triangle northwest.
