History

Yala was set aside as a hunting reserve in 1900 and became, with Wilpattu, one of Sri Lanka's first two national parks in 1938. Its scrub jungle, rock outcrops, and lagoons hold one of the world's densest leopard populations, alongside the ruins of the ancient Sithulpawwa monastery deep inside the park.
