History

Sinharaja — the 'lion king' forest of legend — is the island's last great stretch of primary lowland rainforest, saved from logging in the 1970s and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. More than half its trees and most of Sri Lanka's endemic birds are found nowhere else on earth; Deniyaya's tea country is its southern gateway.
