History

Matale sits in the spice-growing heart of the island, its gardens of cinnamon, pepper, and cardamom long feeding the export trade. At the Aluvihare rock temple just north of town, the Pali Buddhist canon was first committed to writing in the 1st century BC, and the 1848 Matale rebellion against British rule began here.
