History
By the Mahavamsa chronicle, Mahiyanganaya is where the Buddha made his first visit to the island, and its stupa — said to enshrine a lock of his hair — is held to be Sri Lanka's oldest. The town on the Mahaweli's east bank is also the gateway to Dambana, home of the island's last Veddah communities.
