History

Dambulla's cave temples have been in continuous use since King Valagamba took refuge here in the 1st century BC and later gilded the caves in gratitude. The five shrine caves, with more than 150 Buddha images and some 2,000 square metres of painted ceiling, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site at the heart of the Cultural Triangle.
