History
A trading port known to Arab merchants by the 8th century, Colombo passed through Portuguese, Dutch, and British hands, each leaving forts, canals, and grand public buildings. The British made it the island's capital and built its great artificial harbour, and it remains Sri Lanka's commercial heart even after the administrative capital moved to nearby Kotte.
