History

Batticaloa grew around its vast lagoon, famed in local lore for 'singing fish', and was fortified by the Portuguese in 1628 before the Dutch took the fort a decade later — the island's first Dutch conquest. A centre of Tamil culture on the east coast, it has revived as a laid-back lagoon-and-beach destination since the civil war ended.
