History
Weligama — 'sandy village' — is an old fishing bay famous for its stilt fishermen, the carved Kushtarajagala rock statue, and tiny Taprobane island, whose 1920s villa was home to writer Paul Bowles. Its long, gentle beach break has made it Sri Lanka's beginner-surf capital.
