History

Ritigala's abrupt mountain, rising from the dry plains, was a refuge of kings in legend and history before hermit monks of the austere pamsukulika order built a great forest monastery on its slopes in the 9th century. Its stone-paved paths and double-platform ruins survive inside a strict nature reserve rich in rare herbs.
