History
Kegalle town commands the old Colombo-Kandy road through plumbago and rubber country. Nearby Pinnawala began in 1975 as a government orphanage for abandoned wild elephants and grew into the world's largest captive elephant herd, whose twice-daily river bathing made the village famous.
