History

The Kalpitiya peninsula guarded the mouth of the Puttalam lagoon on the old pearl and cinnamon routes; the Dutch built a fort here in 1667 to control the trade, and the Portuguese-era St Anne's shrine at Talawila remains a major Catholic pilgrimage. Since the 2000s its lagoon winds have made it Sri Lanka's kitesurfing capital, with dolphin and whale watching offshore.
