History

Beruwala is held to be the island's oldest Muslim settlement, founded by Arab traders around the 10th century, and its Kechimalai mosque on the headland remains an important pilgrimage site. The adjoining Moragalla beach became one of Sri Lanka's first west-coast resort strips in the 1970s.
